Tax free shopping (TFS) is buying goods in a foreign country and obtaining a refund of the value added tax (VAT), which has been collected by the retailer on those goods.

GENERAL CONDITONS
To Qualify for tax-free shopping you must meet the following requirements : Be a resident of a non-EU country at the time of purchase * Be at least 16 years old.

EXPATRIATES
*If you are an EU passport holder who is resident of a non-EU country, you are also eligible as long as you can provide a proof of your residency (for French citizens, the consulate registration proof is required).

OVERSEAS TERRITORIES
Overseas territories are also eligible for tax-refund shopping in the EU, including all citizens of overseas territories which are not part of the customs territory of the European Union:

The French overseas communities of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy.

The following territories of other EU Member States: the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, etc.), Andorra, the Faeroe Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, San Marino, the Vatican, Gibraltar, the Dutch side of Saint Martin, the island of Heligoland and the territory of Büsingen, Livigno, Campione d’Italia, Mount Athos, the Åland Islands, and Greenland.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
If you are international student in France, you can benefit from tax-refund shopping for purchases made in the last 3 months of your studies, before heading back permanently to your country of residence (which must be a non-EU country). The duration mentioned above varies for each EU country- this guideline is for France.

If you have goods in your luggage to be checked in, then you must obtain the custom validation from the EU airport where you will check-in the hold luggage.

If you have goods in your hand luggage, then you must obtain the custom validation at the last EU airport you depart from.

You should get your tax refund form validated prior to check-in at your last point of exit from the EU.

Each airport is different and customs desk location vary by airport. Most of them are very well indicated at the airport; when they are not we pro-actively provide you in the app the exact location before your departure date. In case of doubt, just drop us a message in the chat and we will we will provide you with the customs office exact location of your departure airport and terminal.

From France going back to Switzerland by road, there are 3 customs office for VAT refund on your way back that can be found at the following border points:

Ferrière-sous-Jougne
Vallard-Thonex
Saint-Julien-en-Genevois

Going back to Switzerland through the Cornavin train station, you will first arrive on the French side of the train station and go through customs. Usually the custom office is staffed and you can get your stamp here. In case it is not, best is to contact us through live chat to find a solution.

You will need to get your form validated by the customs at your last exit point from the EU. The goods must be present when you validate your tax refund form It is better to asses beforehand where the custom office is and make sure it is staffed before leaving.
